bjarke ingels: lego towers

yes, I have been to archidex 2008 and no, I did not attend either datum: kl or kl design forum as my flight did not suit the event time. of course, I will blog about archidex in a bigger scale, but today isn’t that day yet.

yangsquare.com statistics

anyway, the days before archidex 2008 at kuala lumpur, my statistics surged up until a peak yesterday, a new daily record for me. I was wondering where are all the visitors from; and I was suprised- bjarke ingels group website linked to my site instead of PAM’s site. so, I decided to honour bjarke ingels for a while..

bjarke ingels

bjarke ingels is a famed denmark architect- or should I say a ‘vibrant’ and ‘young’ architect, that once worked with rem koolhaas. his works are out of the word ‘conventional’ and seemed to struggle against mainstream architectural forms. he described his archi-theories as;

Historically the field of architecture has been dominated by 2 opposing extremes. On one side an avant-garde full of crazy ideas. Originating from philosophy, mysticism or a fascination of the formal potential of computer visualizations they are often so detached from reality that they fail to become something other than eccentric curiosities. On the other side there are well organized corporate consultants that build predictable and boring boxes of high standard. Architecture seems to be entrenched in two equally unfertile fronts: Either naively utopian or petrifying pragmatic. We believe that there is a third way wedged in the no mans land between the diametrical opposites. Or in the small but very fertile overlap between the two. A pragmatic utopian architecture that takes on the creation of socially, economically and environmentally perfect places as a practical objective.

green roof is a theme frequently appear in his works as what I noticed, and strike our perception in subtlety. this is exactly what is lacking in malaysian architecture. anyway, his proposed lego towers seemed to be out in the spotlight;

lego towers. and by the name, you should have known what the model is made of. and of course, if realized - the building will not be built with lego blocks. bjarke ingels gridded the plan with modular squares and stacking them up in a landscape variation. a provoking subtlety.

and a video;

“The firm belief that we have the power and the skills to change the surface of our planet, to better fit the way we want to live. Our cities are not like they are because god created them like that. We did. And therefore we have the right and responsibility to change them if they do not fit our new ways of life.” - bjarke ingels
