ryugyong: a new face for the worst building in the world

let me introduce you the dubbed worst building in the world; ryugyong hotel. this building in pyongyang, north korea was planned to be 105 stories and 330 meters in height and get this; it was supposed to be completed in 1989!
heck, if completed it will be the highest hotel ever built; with 3000 rooms and 7 revolving restaurants. this project was a big risk to north korea since it consumed 2 % of the tiny country’s economy. but as far as overconfidence goes, structural safety due to poor materials and construction mean the building never pass the test for occupancy.
the construction halted in 1992 and has since suspended until recently. north koreans were oblivious to the existence of the huge skyscraper that is ironically prominent in pyongyang’s skyline. hence, it was known as manmade biggest failure.

fortunately an egyptian telco company agreed to refurbish the facade with glass panels for a deal of installing antennas on top of the tower. nevertheless, I doubt the building will be safe for occupancy when it is completed in 2012.

I don’t think it is the worst building built by mankind…there are many other disgusting ones…
this one is more obvious due to its scale and height only…
don’t forget it is like being built over 20 years ago…
now they refurbish it, so won’t become the ugliest or worst

on the contrary to what many people think, i think it’s REALLY COOL! a bit sad about the glass panels. it’s unfinished state looks better. one of the ugly buildings i could think of (and tops the list) is torre agbar (sp.).

Well, I cannot understand the reason why il dottore Boeri forgot Coca-Cola in his special thanks: THIS is the only question that I have to ask. Our review ACT!, and architecture and art review with attitude, will try to prevent this situation: we won’t give any place to Coca-Cola in its content, nothing is more certain.
