Schroder House: Gerrit Rietveld
SCHRODER HOUSE: GERRIT RIETVELD
In the early 1920s and there was one art movement called De Stijl. The term in dutch literally means ‘the style’. Characterized by sudden primary colors such as yellow, red and blue – because their ideology seeks to reduce art to scratch, the primary elements.
For them, any work of art were composed of the very basic elements such as vertical and horizontal lines, primary (red, blue and yellow) and monochrome colors. Pretty much similar to how a modern inkjet printer works. Indeed, De Stijl upholds that we all shall go back to the essence of all creation.
Moving on to the question Gerrit Rietveld, the architect of the Schroder House.
Rietveld was both an architect and furniture designer of the De Stijl movement. His works include one of the monuments of said movement, which is this simple looking chair, known as the Red and Blue Chair. The horizontal and vertical lines of the chair in this sense doesn’t obstruct or intersect with each other- allowing the lines to exist independently.

A particular innovation in Schroder House, the furnitures arrangements are dynamic and flexible. This is where the chairs and tables can be folded, boxes to be slided into the interior of the wall and some windows are removable. In the first floor, Rietveld employed creative use of sliding doors in spaces, where at one time it could be a large open space for family, and the other dividing partition rooms for everyone.

I can go ahead and create the DWG in AutoCAD 2008 for the Reitveld Red and Blue chair, but perhaps there is already a DWG out there that is true to the original design. It is a simple enough design, I have some specs for it (Reitveld is big around here: I live in The Netherlands).
Any clues?

hi there! im loving the analysis!! im using this building as a precedent as well as the miami musuem by herzog! the simplicity of lines …various boxes pushing in and out creating spaces! but im not too sure how to go about designing my own “version”..the building has to be by the sea…which makes it complicated! anyway thank you so much if anyones got any ideas that would be great!

Thanks very much for the CAD drawings put up for the schroder house. Very handy for my current Architecture Technology project.
One question doh, What resource did you work from? While I was dimensioning the external walls, they seem drastically over scaled, at some cases 2.5meters+. Here in Ireland its all metric. Did you use a different unit? Or when printed out does it ajust ?

Well, this is part of what I was told to do for my assignment, the Schroder House:
“The analysis on your building has to relate to the inter-related themes of space, form, body and technique. The analysis will include a series of analytical drawings and diagrams as well as writing/essay on your position and observations. Your goal is to provide an insight into how architectural theory translates (or not) into practice of architecture by analyzing a building in reference to the course material and the moment in which it was built. This assignment has four parts; space, form, body and technique. Each part of the assignment will include analytical drawings and diagrams as well as writing/essay (1000 words). All four parts will accumulate in the final Case Study.”
The first submission about Space analysis is due on Sep. 25; Form analysis is due on Oct. 23; Body analysis is due on Nov. 17; and Technique analysis is due on Dec. 8.

What a fantastic job you have done.
For you to take what limited information that is availble and produce this level of work is exceptional.
I would like to build a model of the Schroder House. Do you have the dimensions or drawings of the exterior edges of the 1st and 2nd floor plans?
I see the floor plans you have but it’s hard to determine the limits or edges of the floor plans along the outer edges.
Thank you for your willingness to share the work you have done.
Some day I know I will see a great building with your name as the architect.

hey your work is really g8 and you have out in alot of hard work. I was hoping you could help me out i have a project due and i need the AutoCAD drawings in pdf format. your scale says its 1.50 but when i download them and try to set the scale to 1.50 it is way to big and does not fit the page. Your website looks fantastic!
I am doing a research project in Taiwan about the Schroder House and I was wondering if by any chance you knew a few rules about the house structure, which could help me out….
1. Although the sliding wall system was a new inovation in the western world, why place them in the exact places where he placed them?
Why are they situated where they are, is there any mathematical, or design rule that was followed when placing the panels?
2. I know the primary colours were important to the De Stijl moevement and I know what theories Modrian had about the colours, also understanding how other artists wanted to help out with the colour scheme, but were refused.
Why then did Gerrit and Shroder together decide to do all the colours? Was there any rules or theory to why red was used where it was in the Shroder house? And why was each colour placed in the house in the space that it was placed?
Was there any theory specifically to this house on why that colour was placed there, and this colour placed here?
I am sorry to trouble you and I see that you get many requests, if you know of any other websites that may be able to help out, that would also be useful…?
